I feel like I’ve been hearing about YG’s new girl group, Blackpink, for years and years and that’s probably because I have! Blackpink finally debuted and successfully delivered an all kill in the charts.
Although I was tired of YG’s media play – the slow drip feed of images and morsels of information here and there. As much as I tried to deny it, when it finally came to it, my interest for Blackpink was peaked.
I logged into Vapp in the morning to see Blackpink’s debut showcase. I was a little disappointed Blackpink didn’t perform live but at least we got to see two mvs from them. One being ‘Whistle’ and the other ‘Boombayah.’ What do you think of their songs?
When I first heard Whistle, I felt at first it was a little lacklustre with little impact. It was too slow and meandering for me. It felt like about four songs in one and so it wasn’t very cohesive. But there are some really strong parts of the song, I really love the section from 1.17 to 1.35 and I wish they had done something more with that. Sadly they don’t and it dips back into a really simplistic ‘melody’.
Doesn’t Lisa sound like CL when she raps? I don’t know whether it is intentional, but it’s there! But anyway so far everyone can sing and they can dance. Let’s just hope YG doesn’t pop them back in the basement.
Boombayah is what I was expecting from them! It’s more in yer face and fun. I kinda enjoy the ‘I don’t need a boy, I need a man’ line. I always appreciate sassiness in my girl groups!
Weirdly though, after more listens, I find that I’m enjoying listening to the more chilled ‘Whistle’. It’s different from what I’ve heard and I find myself randomly saying ‘make them whistle like a missile’.
So what’s my verdict? In the wake of 4minutes demise and 2NE1’s never-ending hiatus, Blackpink is definitely welcome in my books. I need some more vamps to kick up the world of cutesy girl groups and bring out the sass!
