I recently watched Mulan last night, the movie version that is.
What’s Mulan about?
A girl disguises herself as a man and goes to fight in a war in place of her father.
Is she a girl worth fighting for?
It’s been on my watch list for a while but I hadn’t really made the effort to watch it. I’d heard a lot of people saying that it wasn’t emotive enough. Having seen it for myself, it’s actually one of the reasons why I liked it. It didn’t seem too melodramatic, of course there’s a bit of crying, it is a war movie after all! but it seemed like just the right amount to me.
I also liked that it had some romance thrown in. It seemed like a movie more along the angsty lines of ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’ or ‘Hero’ (not as visually stunning but that’s ok!).
I couldn’t help but compare to Disney’s Mulan. Somewhere along the line I realised I don’t know what Disney made up and what is from the legend! I concluded if there are similarities in the movie and cartoon, it’s because it came from the legend!
And yes, there are some! (ah but sadly there is no talking dragon) I like both versions and was pleasantly surprised with this adaptation. So if you’re looking for a Chinese movie to watch, check Mulan out!
